5 Home Remedies for Heartburn

Heartburn is a particularly nasty affliction.  Between the pain and the nasty taste as regurgitated food splashes up into your throat, it is something any heartburn sufferer would rather do without.  Yech!   The faster you can control it … the better.  There are a number of home remedies for heartburn that have been around for years.  Although I have personally found inconsistent results with many of these heartburn home remedies, different remedies do seem to home remedy for heartburnwork for different heartburn sufferers.  Papaya, for instance, is one heartburn home remedy that some people have had success with.  Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that aids in digestion.

Apple cider vinegar is a home remedy that is good for a lot of things, including as a home remedy for heartburn.  If you’re “hard core” you can just down a couple of tablespoons straight.  Personally, I’m more of a wimp so I dilute it in a glass of water.  A word of warning, however, … all apple cider vinegar is not created equal.  The only apple cider vinegar product that I recommend is Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. It’s well known, natural and doesn’t have as much of a harsh bite to it that other vinegars do. It is mostly found in health food or natural/organic food stores and is relatively inexpensive.  Take this 20 minutes before eating.   If you can’t stand the vinegar (sometimes it takes some practice to get used to it), something that I have found that helps me is to eat a quarter to a half of an apple.  It seems to settle my stomach down.

Another home remedy for heartburn, is adding a bit of lemon or lime juice to a glass of water.  A lot of people think that, because lemon and lime are acidic, that it would hurt rather help.  Oddly, when lemon or lime is digested it is actually an alkalizing food so it helps to neutralize the stomach acid. For more information on alkalizing foods search the  net for Acid and Alkaline Foods.

If you chew gum, I have some good news for you.  Researchers have found that people who chew gum during a heartburn attack find some relief.  I honestly don’t have any experience with this because I don’t chew gum.  It makes a certain amount of sense because chewing gum will activate your saliva.  Saliva contains a kind of natural bicarbonate that would help to neutralize the stomach acid.

If you looking for a natural, holistic approach to curing your heartburn then I would recommend the book Heartburn  No More.  It is the most comprehensive approach to effective natural healing that I have found.
